Tough school super gets nabbed drinking By O’Ryan Johnson, Boston Herald Wednesday, July 20, 2005 - Updated: 04:05 AM EST A get-tough superintendent who barred parents from a high school hockey game last winter was arrested over the weekend for drunk driving, police said. Charles Lyons II, superintendent of Shawsheen Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School, was found by Burlington police about 1:30 a.m. stopped at the intersection of Mall Road and Cambridge Street, asleep at the wheel, Lt. William Faria said. Police could not confirm a FOX-TV Ch. 25 report that Lyons was barefoot and had an unopened can of beer in the car. Lyons refused the breathalyzer test and failed a field sobriety test, Faria said. Lyons could not be reached for comment. Shawsheen School Committee member Robert G. Peterson said he spoke with Lyons about the drunk-driving charge. ``He's very sorry it happened,'' Peterson said. ``He's embarrassed. He's a great superintendent. We all make mistakes.'' Peterson said there has been no discussion among other committee members as to what if any punishment Lyons should receive. He did not know if a drunk-driving charge was cause for dismissal under Lyons contract. ``I would hope it doesn't come to that,'' Peterson said. In February Lyons and school officials at Northeast Malden banned parents and school kids from attending a playoff hockey game between the two schools because of youth violence at an earlier game. http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=94558 |
