| Teen killed driving tractor to school June 3, 2005, 2:56 PM EDT NewsDay.com FABIUS, N.Y. -- A 16-year-old boy taking his family's farm tractor to school Friday for "tractor day" was killed in a collision with an all-terrain vehicle, state police said. Michael Neugebauer of Lafayette was driving the tractor and pulling a small homemade trailer with a friend inside when the accident occurred just after 7 a.m. on a local road, said state police Capt. Jeffrey Raub. Neugebauer was driving a 1984 Ford tractor down a hill when it began to pick up speed. Neugebauer apparently tried to slow the tractor down, but still slammed into the back of the ATV, Raub said. Both vehicles went off the road. The passenger in the trailer, Kyle Sullivan, 16, was taken to University Hospital in Syracuse with a broken leg and neck and back injuries. The driver of the ATV, Kayla Carter, 15, was not injured. All three were students at Fabius-Pompey High School, which is located in rural Onondaga County, about 20 miles south of Syracuse. Raub said the "tractor day" event is a tradition that involves students driving farm tractors to school and parking them in the school lot to show them off. The event is not sanctioned by school officials. Administrators, meanwhile, canceled all after-school activities Friday, as well as a school dance Saturday night. Counselors will be available at the school on both days. http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/newyork/ny-bc-ny--tractordeath0603jun03,0,65 90650,print.story?coll=ny-region-apnewyork |
