Audit: School funds missing Ex-treasurer ordered to repay $12,737.94, pay for audit; Hancock prosecutor reviewing report. By Bill McCleery June 4, 2005 Hancock County authorities are studying a State Board of Accounts audit that showed more than $12,000 was not deposited into a Greenfield-Central High School extracurricular fund. "There were funds that did not get deposited in the school's bank account," Chuck Nemeth, supervisor of township audits for the State Board of Accounts, said Friday. Hancock County Prosecutor Larry Gossett declined to comment on the audit's findings Friday other than to say he is reviewing the report and considering what, if any, actions to pursue. A former treasurer at the school, Cynthia Richmond, was in charge of the account. She was placed on paid administrative leave in November after state officials found irregularities. She resigned in February. The State Board of Accounts has ordered Richmond to reimburse the school corporation in the amount of $12,737.94. It has also ordered her to pay the State Board of Accounts $13,769.07 to cover the cost of the audit. "When we encounter missing funds, the taxpayer should not have to pay the cost of the audit," Nemeth said. Efforts to reach Richmond were unsuccessful, but she said in a letter included in the audit report that she made honest mistakes. "I made many bookkeeping errors for this audit period, but I assure you that all monies collected by me were deposited in the Greenfield-Central High School ECA (extracurricular activity) account," she wrote. http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050604/NEWS01/506040463/1006 &template=printart |
