Images Allegedly Found On School Computer

SALINAS, Calif. -- A Salinas elementary school teacher is charged with downloading child pornography on his school computer.
Authorities said 46-year-old Larry Mead is a teacher and vice principal at University Park Elementary School in south Salinas, and that he
downloaded hundreds of child porn images.
Late Monday, prosecutors filed 17 charges against Mead, accusing him of downloading and possessing child pornography with intent to
distribute.
Investigators said they have confiscated as many as 500 images and videos of children being sexually exploited from Mead's school computer.
The images were discovered last December, when a computer technician noticed illegal downloads on the computer. Prosecutors said it took
this long to file charges because of the large volume of evidence and because they wanted to make sure they had the right person.
"We're not in the business of filing charges unless we feel that we have sufficient evidence to support those charges. We've taken time with this
investigation ... and we think we have enough evidence to go forward with this prosecution," prosecutor Gary Thelander said.
Prosecutors said none of the pornography includes images Mead or students at the school.
Mead is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday afternoon.
School district officials have scheduled a special meeting for Friday to inform parents of the charges against Mead and answer any questions
they may have. The meeting will start at 6 p.m. at the district offices.
