When students in the Boerne Independent School District head back to the classroom
in a few weeks, some will face random drug tests.

In a unanimous vote Monday night, the school board approved a new drug policy
designed to help reduce drug use among students.

Under the policy, each student who participates in a sport, extra-curricular activity or
drives or parks a vehicle on school property will be subjected to random drug testing.

A student who tests positive would be suspended from the sport or activity.

Parents would be notified, but law enforcement would not.

"It's very confidential. In this age and time, it's the right thing to keep things private,"
said Alan Rich, a member of the committee that helped draft the new policy.

"We're going to honor that relationship and keep it strictly for the people who need to
be involved. That's really the parents and the student," he said.

Students who test positive would not be suspended from school, even with repeat
offenses.

The random drug-testing program is available to all students, even those not involved
in sports or extra-curricular activities.
