Parent/teacher group treasurer charged
with embezzlement
The Morning Call

Over a 23-month period, police said, the treasurer of a parent/teacher organization at
Neidig Elementary School in Quakertown embezzled $20,460 from a fund used to pay
for student field trips and purchase books.

"It's sad that something like this can happen," said Quakertown Community School
District Superintendent Jim Scanlon. "That takes money away from projects for the
kids."

John DeMatteo, 43, of 445 E. Broad St., Quakertown, was charged Tuesday with theft
by unlawful taking, theft by deception, receiving stolen property and tampering with
records or identification. He was arraigned before District Judge C. Robert Roth and
released on his own recognizance.

According to Sgt. Don Bender of Quakertown police, DeMatteo has a child at the
school and is an accountant, but currently unemployed.

He was appointed treasurer of Neidig's Parents Aiding Learning Association, or PAL,
on May 3, 2003.
