Student Charged In Alcohol-Related
Death Pleads No Contest
Barrington Given Three Years Probation

NORMAN, Okla. -- The first OU student charged after the alcohol-poisoning death of
another student last fall has pleaded no contest to a felony charge of providing
alcohol to a minor.

OU junior Cody Barrington, 22, entered the plea Wednesday. He was given three years
of probation and was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service.

Barrington was charged last October after the death of freshman Blake Hammontree,
19, of Medford. Barrington was accused of giving alcohol to a different underage
person at the pledge party where Hammontree died last September.

An autopsy found Hammontree's blood-alcohol content was 0.42, more than five times
the legal limit in Oklahoma.

"From the very beginning, we only asked for punishment consistent with others
charged with this crime," said Barrington's attorney, Josh T. Welch. "We're pleased
with the recommendation by the district attorney's office. The deferred sentence will
keep him from being a convicted felon and, of course, from being incarcerated."

Sigma Chi member Raymond Davis, 21, was also charged with felony providing
alcohol to a minor, but it was reduced to a misdemeanor and he was given one-year
probation and a $50 fine.

Felony charges against three other Sigma Chi members are pending.
