Elementary school teacher sentenced for abusing two boys Newsday.com June 11, 2005, 2:24 PM EDT TOMS RIVER, N.J. -- A former elementary school teacher was sentenced to one year minus one day in jail for inappropriate conduct with two sixth-grade boys. Robin Gialanella, 26, pleaded guilty to two counts of child endangerment. According to authorities, the incidents took place between Sept. 2003 and May 2004 when Gialanella was a math teacher at the Silver Bay Elementary School. Gialanella kissed the boys and allowed them to touch her buttocks, authorities said. Parents of the two boys, who were aged 11 and 12 at the time of the incidents, said the abuse lasted for eight months and that the boys were ostracized and humiliated by classmates. Under terms of her plea, Gialanella must register as a sex offender under Megan's Law and be under lifetime supervision. She will also surrender her New Jersey teaching certificate. Mothers of both boys, who were not identified, read statements in court at Friday's sentencing. "You are sick, manipulative individual and no better than a man who molests a 12-year-old girl," said one of the mothers. "She violated the role of a teacher and used her position of authority." Gialanella did not make a statement in court. http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/newjersey/ny-bc-nj--teachersentenced0611jun 11,0,2438795.story?coll=ny-region-apnewjersey |
